It is especially in the staging of great fairs, carnival scenes and other festivities that Tibor Dengyel gave the best of himself. Here we can clearly feel the inspiration of village festivals, farandoles, this gourmet joy that illuminates an existence governed by the rhythm of nature. A baroque profusion of characters, couples, masks, small scenes drowned in the mass gives his paintings an astonishing vitality. Bosch, Brueghel and Ensor united within the same universe, this is what Tibor Dengyel has achieved in these works which nevertheless remain so personal.

Memoirs of Lyvia Dengyel 1925-2020
Written in April / May 2015
Foreword
Born in Budapest in 1925, Lyvia Dengyel-Salgo experienced, during her long life, the heyday of the interwar period, Hungary's entry into the war against the USSR, the German occupation, the invasion. Soviet Union and finally its flight to Western Europe in 1948.
We are publishing this text in her memory, she who was a privileged witness to the upheavals that Europe experienced during the 95 years of her life.
We have had the privilege of working with Lyvia Dengyel-Salgo for the past twenty years. We have learned a lot about this period, not so long ago, but so little known to the general public in Western Europe.

Discover two youth works by eugene de bie
Eugène De Bie was born on March 10, 1914 in Watermael-Boitsfort. Her family is of Dutch and Walloon origins. For professional reasons, his father, an engineer, was transferred to Jemappes. Eugène De Bie spent his childhood there. Very early on, he became aware of his vocation and was enrolled at the “Institut de Mons” where he followed the courses of J. Verleye. It was this painter from Ghent who would mean the most to De Bie by far. Then, for two years at St-Luc and finally, he realized his dream and entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. This cycle of studies ended shortly after the mid-1930s with a two-year internship at the Louvre Museum. He leaves us two portraits of youthful friends from these years: The portraits of Anna Goossens (1935) and Fernand Hauquier (1936)

This painting is the first gift offered by Tibo Dengyel to his future wife
My marriage to a painter made me know, alongside good times, the bohemian, the difficulty of existence and the wonder at the art of painting.
The painter who always did what he loved to do, always in a good mood, was very easy going and - miracle! led me - after his passing - and after a few years of study, also on the shimmering path of colors.

Death of madame lyvia salgo widow of the hungarian painter tibor dengyel
We regret to announce the death of Madame Lyvia Salgo, wife of the Hungarian Painter Tibor Dengyel, on April 28, 2020 in her 95th year.
Madame Dengyel was born in Budapest on October 31, 1925 in a middle-class family. Her father, Mr. Salgo, ran a haute couture business with a branch in Brussels.
Lyvia Salgo was in Budapest during World War II. She lived through the American bombings, the fighting in Budapest and the arrival of Soviet troops.
In 1948, after many adventures, Lyvia Salgo and her mother managed to flee west to finally arrive in Brussels.
Soon we will publish Lyvia Salgo's memoirs on the sites www.artpromotionsa.be

Eugene de bie figure in "the benezit" since 1999
BENEZIT (Paris)
@Edition 1999
Editions Gründ - Paris - Volume 2 - pp 295
From BIE Eugene
Born March 10, 1914 in Watermael-Boitsfort (Brussels). Died August 20, 1983 at the hospital of Quimper (Finistère), accidentally. Twentieth century.
Active also in France. Belgian. Painter of composition with characters, portraits,
figures, landscapes, still lifes. Fantastic.
He was a student of the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, and won the Godecharle Prize and the Prix de Rome. A scholarship allowed him a two-year stay in Paris, where he regularly attended the Louvre Museum and perhaps the Ecole du Louvre. Following a first trip to Brittany, he settled at Guilvinec, near Quimper, from 1947 to 1960. Then he divided his time between Brussels and Le Guilvinec, where he now owned a holiday home, near which a car accident caused his death. He has participated in numerous collective exhibitions, including: 1979: Palace of Arts and Culture of Brest, 1982: Gallery Presences of Brussels, Basel International Fair, Second World Triennial of Figurative Art in Lyon (where he obtained the Grand Prix de Composition), 1983: From Brueghel to Magritte in Lausanne, etc ... He has also shown his works in numerous solo exhibitions, among others: 1973 retrospective exhibition at the Palais des Arts and Culture in Brest. 1977 retrospective exhibition at the Abbey of Forest (Brussels), and after his death: Brussels in 1983, Basel in 1984, the mayor of Guilvinec 1984, the Abbey Forest in 1984, the Museum of Fine Arts of Mons (Belgium) in 1985.
De Bie painted on all themes: some landscapes, especially Brittany, still lifes, many portraits or characters in situation: The Rest of the fisherman for example. But it is especially in the scenes of imagination and in fantastic subjects that he commands attention.
He has chosen a few characters in which he finds himself: clowns, Saint-Antoine in temptation, Don Quixote in his disillusionment. In fantasy subjects, he accumulates disparate elements, stemming from his dreams or fantasies, with obsessions often provoked by the latent conflict between his mysticism and obvious erotic impulses.
As for the technique, it has evolved considerably with the evolution of the themes treated. It has evolved in the direction of a more and more thorough search for a meticulous descriptive fidelity, demanded in particular by the fantastic, therefore unreal, subjects to which we must confer credibility by the realistic precision of the detail. His sources were diverse: we recognize memories of Brueghel, Jerome Bosch, then, with a jump in time, Dali and especially Magritte, as well as the latter in the themes and "collages" elements disparate as in technique and up to the range of tinted gray awakened some red: The weight - The devil in the shop - The musical egg - The big theater - The key to space - The slide - The Infernal Egg - The Furious Round - The Well - Summer Women, and Others. Despite the sources and despite the similarities, ie despite Bosch and despite Magritte, De Bie has always denied having a link with surrealism, claiming on its behalf the fantastic character. To conclude, we can only today be surprised at the relative lack of knowledge that struck a work that was ultimately considerable.

In the steps of eugene de bie in bretagne - august 2018
But the war interrupts his first works. Wounded in 1940, he is left with his wife and two sons, in a poverty that prevents him from devoting himself fully to painting. We find in the paintings periods "red" and "black", the concerns and ghosts of war that haunt his imagination. Fortunately, little by little, the existence is more lenient and some works are sold.
Then comes Brittany, which will exert on the painter a fascination that will not fade until his death. The atmosphere of the place, the warm welcome of the inhabitants amaze. And De Bie immerses himself in the oscillating light and the power of the elements. This land, full of legends and mysteries, leaves it all to the frenzy of painting: still lifes, countryside landscapes, seascapes, views of harbors, portraits of fishermen he captures in full activity, nothing must escape the eye and with a brush.
Located in Guilvinec, a small port in southern Finistère, the painter is fascinated by the numerous circuses that stop there. Then begins a period where ballads, comedians, masks and draperies rub shoulders in strange lunar compositions. All the mysteries of the spectacle and the artifice are contained therein. Little by little, his vision of nature and his consciousness of the supernatural lead him to a mystical interpretation of the world.
One thousand nine hundred and fifty-two will be the year of meetings: Cocteau, Malraux, Picasso, all fortify in his approach but also make him aware of his loneliness in Guilvinec. In 1960, the De Bie family returned to Brussels. Significantly, the artist's imagination is refined and presents itself as an essential source of inspiration. This imaginary incarnated in the character both pathetic and theatrical Don Quixote.
In recent years, this inner world has been purified and brings Eugene De Bie to maturity. With his experience in Brittany, having worked with a powerful and beautiful nature, he turns to the ultimate synthesis of the imaginary and the real that he organizes by a code of colors, lines and geometric constructions. Human figures seem to face the infinite and advance serenely towards their destiny.
On July 7, 1983, on a road of Brittany, destiny strikes cruelly. A car accident costs the life of the painter's companion. Eugene De Bie, seriously wounded, died on August 20 and went to join his wife in the small cemetery of Guilvinec.
Thus disappeared a man whose only ambition was to believe in art, to live by it and find a source of joy. It is not necessary to say more. Let us simply look at this sentence of the great Rodin: "Beautiful works, which are the highest testimonies of human intelligence and sincerity, tell all that can be said about man and the world. and then they make it clear that there is something else you can not know. "

Portraits (photos) of the artists
A "portrait gallery" of artists whose works we present.
Eugene de bie (1914-1983) has exhibited several times at the bodenschatz gallery in basel
Tribute Mrs J. Sandrès from the Bodenschatz Gallery - Basel - Switzerland
Birth artist, dedicated his life to Art. An indefatigable creator, to the legal of the greatest, he found in his cradle a dazzling technique. Precursor of surrealism, as much as expressionism. At the end of his life, his baroque writing was more pathetic, relying on a thousand-year-old symbolism of the broken egg and the dead bird.
Eugene De Bie you had two visions of the world.
One that plays with destiny with a backdrop, stairs, trestles, draperies and secret drawers.
The other, that of the land of your heart. A low window opening on your dear Brittany, land of legends, spirituality and melancholy. The austerity of the Bretons, their way of life tinged with courage was an example for you, every day. Faced with out-of-the-ordinary elements, these men were obsessed with taming death. Like them, this fear will continue you all your life. A mystery haunted you, that of the ephemeral passage of man among so many marvels and so many ruins.
Your work is a mixture of the fantastic North union with Latin rationality. You have meditated more on beings and on nature than on ideas.
It is in your small apartment on the Avenue Van Volxem in Forest-Brussels, in this salon which served as a workshop, that will be born works of inventiveness staggering, nourished original affirmations. Projection of your dreams and your fantasies. It is also here that will return, boosted, reduced to the essential, your "white" with multiple shades.
But was it not the frankness of the Breton façades in which the giant shadows of harlequin harlequins who danced around the corollas at the fires of St. John, or the universe of pallor symbol of your vital quest, were reflected?
Shared between eroticism and spirituality, some of your characters seem to write your personal story. You are at the same time, a puppet showman and travelers with a proud appearance, so poignant in their misfortune.
Eugène De Bie, you are close to Erasmus and this spirit of the Renaissance which approved the madness.
You have known the pain of the death of your daughter Bernadette, then the revolt and a sense of injustice. Petrified with anguish before the abyss of your existence and the fear of death, your work went more and more towards the fantastic. In religion, you have read the expression of real misery. When you represent Christ as a sailor, among the sailors, it is to the Church that you give a lesson in humility.
Eugene De Bie, you were a simple man and this simplicity allowed you to speak of your days of misery and poverty. It allowed you to mention the joy of your work and your faith in your own reasons. You were proud of a belated success that embodied for you the projection of certainties to come.
Thanks to your work, you are present among us, with your tumults, your dreams and your eternal nostalgia for lost paradise, which you found in Armorica. The sea remembers it, we can hear the organs of the ocean celebrate your glorious passage. This ocean that often adorned the window of your poor house of Guilvinec.
Your work is part of this world of spiritual adventure where the poetic nave is heading towards the unknown. You still had something to say. You could not do it. At the end of your journey, death has come. This dark veil of the passions of life that you knew so well you covered, with your wife, on the roads of Finistere August 20, 1983.

DEATH OF THE EUGENE PAINTER OF BIE IN BRITTANY
We learn in France, the death of our compatriot Eugène De Bie, at the clinic of Quimper, following a traffic accident that occurred near Pont-l'Abbé in Brittany. During this accident, Ms. De Bie was also killed. The artist and his companion rest in the cemetery of Guilvinec where they had a property.
The painter Eugène De Bie was born in Watermael-Boitsfort in 1914. He came from a Frisian family whose name became famous in the 17th century in the history of Flemish painting. Eugène De Bie had studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in the workshops of Van Haelen and Anto-Carte, and for two years at the Ecole du Louvre in Paris.
In 1947 he divided himself between our country and Brittany, to which he devoted his whole life a deep spiritual attachment.
Eugene De Bie leaves us the memory of a courageous painter who lived his art and his ideal, and that the destiny broke in his autumn.

Portrait of king baudouin - article in the free belgium-december 2014
A LAST GESTURE OF QUEEN FABIOLA
Thanks to her, a portrait of King Baudouin will remain Belgian!
Sad coincidence: while Belgium pays the ultimate tribute to Queen Fabiola, ends this Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th December at the Commanderie, at 17 rue de la Chapelle - in front of the church of the same name - a exhibition of fifty works by the Hungarian painter Tibor Dengyel, with as an exceptional piece a portrait of the young King Baudouin made in 1955.
"The painter Dengyel, who died in Brussels in 2000, had left to his widow, Mrs. Livia Dengyel-Salgo, still living in Brussels, various works including this portrait of the King", explains Pierre Goffin, head of Art Promotion SA who organizes exhibitions in Belgium and abroad.
"Having met her soon after the death of her husband, we took care, through the association Association for the Promotion of Art, to exhibit the works of her husband." Among these was the portrait of the King. We have restored and framed this painting and proposed to Mrs Dengyel to offer it at the Palace, then we talked about the project with Carine Verstraeten of the Tourist Office asking for her advice to contact the Palace, and Queen Fabiola acknowledged receipt of her request. letter and proposed to keep this painting at the headquarters of the Tourist Office, in memory of his late husband, which was officially done during the present exhibition ... "
A HALF CENTURY IN BRUSSELS
But who was Tibor Dengyel? As the art historian Didier Paternoster says, Tibor Dengyel, who died in May 2000 in Brussels, would have been 101 years old. At the age of 17, with his passion for drawing and painting, he entered the Academy, then in 1935, went to Budapest to continue his artistic studies.
After obtaining a scholarship to deepen his knowledge in Turkey or Belgium, he opted for our country where he arrived in 1948. Based in Brussels, he continued his career. An excellent connoisseur of the history of art, he turned to the restoration of ancient works. But Dengyel was above all an artist eager to create and devoted himself to a very personal work.
A PORTRAIT ALSO OF ACHILLE VAN ACKER
Didier Paternoster also recalls that "to his creative career was superimposed a vocation as a pedagogue that led him to direct a private course in Ixelles, Auderghem, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert ...".
His universe? "Portraits, landscapes, views of cities, popular types and figures of folklore, nudes, bouquets, fantastic evocations and truculent scenes of carnival or carnival" ... For the artist, "the essential is not not to draw a faithful portrait of the place, but to highlight the elements that make it so beautiful and particular, as the proof is that many landscapes were born in the intimacy of the workshop, and sometimes many years after visit of the artist ".
PROPHET IN ITS COUNTRY OF ADOPTION
Similarly, Tibor Dengyel made "classic portraits but with a lot of psychological depth. Many of his portraits are commands, but it is never surprising to flatter the model.Beyond the appearance, the physiognomy itself, it is more interiority that attracts him. " If we owe him about fifty portraits besides Moerdijk, Tibor Dengyel painted the king Baudouin but also the Prime Minister Achille Van Acker. These two works have seated his reputation in this field.
On the occasion of the centenary of its birth, three exhibitions took place in Brussels in 2013: at the Banca Monte Paschi Belgio headquarters, at the Balassi Brussels Institute and at the Gallery Pictura Aeterna at Petit Sablon. This weekend, it can be discovered on December 13th and 14th from 11 am to 6 pm at the Commanderie.

A work by the painter eugène de bie at the vatican museums
"A work of the painter EUGENE DE BIE" "Piéta Bretonne"gouache 50x60
"acquired by the Museum of the Vatican"
"An event in the posterity of Eugène De Bie’s work."
(Watermael-Boitsfort/Brussels 1914 – Quimper/France 1983)
A work of the Belgian painter Eugène De Bie is from now on part of the collection of the Vatican.
It’s a matter of « Brittany Pietà » painted with gouache in the sixties (50 x 65 cm) which joined a few weeks ago, the prestigious collections of Vatican City. A nice gratitute for the artist deceased in 1983 and whose work counts some pieces of religious art which had been put together in a thematic exhibition at the Basilique of Koekelberg (Brussels) in 1992, exhibition which catalogue was prefaced by Mgr Danneels.
Other works of Eugène De Bie figure in many religious buildings in Europe : a monumental Cross in Sainte-Marie-Mère-de-Dieu church in Forest (Brussels) ; a Way of the cross in Saint-Martin church in Jemappes (Belgium), both of them listed by IRPA (Royal Institute of the Artistic Patrimony) ; a Christ in the shape of a cross in the chapel of the Sainte-Thérèse of Ergue-Armel School (Brittany/France) ; a Christ head crowned with thorns at the Trinitarian Religious Convent of Valence (Geneva/Switzerland) as well as a Saint-François at Tempio Cathedral (Sardinia/Italy).
One knows how much the discorvery of Brittany decisive in the persona land artistic Eugène De Bie’s route. The fisherman’s hard life, the landscapes beat by Ocean and wind, but also trace of innumerable legends and omnipresence of witnesses of the religious history, in particular calvaries, have had a certain impact on the painter’s imaginary. The « Pietà » of the Vatican belongs to this Brittany vein and resumes with a narration which situates the life of the Christ in a local context and no more historic, hence its designation of « Brittany Pietà ». Far from pompous and militant evocations De Bie’s Pietà becomes attached to evoke the affliction in an intimate scene of which certain protagonists claim clearly, by their traditional costume, the transposition of one moment the life of the Christ in another period and another place. By its clear and spirited composition, limpid colours and its upward dynamics the « Brittany Pietà » gives a vision at the same time intimist and powerful of Christ’ sufferings.
