"Japanese screen"
April-May 2006
Together exhibition of the Japansese group ISAM
Once again, after a remarkable exhibition of the works of the Chinese painter Liu Nan during the month of March, the K Gallery presents, from May 5 to 28, 2006, a series of Japanese painted screens (Byobu) which will be a continuation to this incursion into the current trends of Far Eastern painting. This series of unique pieces comes from the International Sumi Art Movement (ISAM) which brings together 140 member artists in Japan and around the world. For 20 years, this dynamic grouping aims to defend the creations of its members and to multiply the cultural exchanges. He has exhibited in Tokyo, Sidney, Nice, Bangkok, Brussels and Paris, among others. This particular form of painting finds its roots in the Japanese tradition. The screens on display at the K Gallery illustrate this subtle art that mixes color and lightness in predominantly horizontal large format works. Nature is omnipresent. Flowers, leaves, trees, rivers come together in 'bucolic' evocations or in more decorative compositions. On generally abstract or even empty backgrounds where the support surfaces strongly, elements stand out. It can be a series of flowers arranged in fans, the gnarled silhouette of a bare tree, the evocation of a garden or a bridge spanning a tumultuous river. All these subjects are treated with an oriental finesse and a great deal of beauty lies in the chromatic choices and the timelessness that emanates from them. An exhibition to discover and works to contemplate in their apparent simplicity.
