"Borys Buryak"
After the exhibition of the Ukrainian painter Mychailo Demtsiu, it is the turn of the Ukrainian Borys Buryak to occupy the walls of the Hilton Brussels Bar. In the convivial setting, about twenty paintings give a good overview of the production of a discreet artist who still dares to live from his art.
Born in 1953 in the village of Podvirnè in the Chernivsti region of Ukraine, Borys Buryak spent his entire schooling in his homeland, especially in the city of Lviv. He is staying there now. But his painting went well beyond the borders of Ukraine to impose itself throughout Europe, including Vienna, Paris and Brussels.
In recent years, we have regularly admired her paintings at the K Gallery in Sablon which has, among other discoveries, largely contributed to the recognition of the artist in our country. A well-deserved recognition because one of the essential qualities of Borys Buryak is to transfigure reality into a kind of fireworks of colors and matter that acts as a balm on our chronic gray. As an alchemist of the brush, he bends the daily to his luminous vision of things, breaks down the forms into a mosaic with broad flat areas, whose powerful structure does not make palpable a certain sensitivity. Without departing completely from the rules of figuration, his approach is nevertheless part of a process of deconstruction of reality that gives many paintings the appearance of summarily assembled puzzles. And yet, what consistency in these compositions! Breaking with the requirements of a classical teaching, the hand of the painter has this assurance which allows the imagination to express itself without hindrance.
Curious about everything, Borys Buryak observes the world with a touch of candor, on the lookout for these lights that transform a landscape into a lasting impression. The freshness of spring warmed by a still shy sun. The opaque silence of the first snows weighing on a massive country church. His still lifes with hints of abstraction play on sharp contrasts between rough surfaces, almost carved and others where the brush barely touches the canvas. His bouquets are as many sheaves of colors. And when it lingers on the human body, it is with an undisguised predilection for feminine curves. Silhouettes modeled, sculpted in a fluid dough with an economy of means which touches on the sketch.
