For the exhibition of this March 2006, the horizons of the K Gallery have decided to open up to the Far East, and China in particular, since it offers to discover the works of the painter Liu Nan, born in Beijing in 1958. Born into a dynasty of famous painters in his country, Liu Nan began his career there at the age of three and did not stop practicing drawing and painting. Based in Belgium for a few years, he has, like many artists of his generation, achieved the fusion between certain aspects of Western art, the traditions of Chinese painting and its more contemporary tendencies. Fusion that affects as much the conception as the realization of these large works and one of the attractions lies precisely in this mixture of familiar and unknown elements. The animal reigns in absolute master: elephants, horses, deer, felines ... leaving only a very discreet place to the man. Some of his compositions are not without evoking the parietal art that sang the strength and elegance of the beast or the merit of the hunter. There is also this symbolic significance that makes each element go far beyond the scope of mere representation. Playing on abstract and dynamic backgrounds that privilege lands and golds, the artist highlights a particular scene that occupies the center of the painting. Sometimes he declines it into a series of episodes that take on the appearance of a fresco or frieze. And, from time to time, he lets flourish colors more vivid, more precious, such as this wonderful blue he declines lapis lazulli blue-night and gives his compositions a timeless dimension.
Liu Nan has exhibited all over the world including London, Tokyo, San Francisco, New York, Austria, France, Monaco ...
