Oiva Toikka (1931-2019) is a Finnish glass artist who gained worldwide fame for his collection of glass art birds, made for the Iittala brand. His glass art is an exception to the aesthetic of simple Nordic design and is quite rich, imaginative and lively. The first piece in the Iittala Birds by Toikka collection saw the light of day in 1972 in the Nuutajärvi glass factory, the oldest in Finland. Since then, every year, splendid examples are added to the collection, more and more sought after by collectors all over the world. The Birds by Toikka collection is an outstanding example of the artist's creativity and the extraordinary skill of glassblowers, working in groups of five to create these works of art. Each bird in the collection is made of blown glass and is unique. Authenticity is guaranteed by the signature on the bottom. During his long career, Oiva Toikka also did other important works on glass. In 1964 he created the Kastehelmi line, characterized by an elegant decoration of drops. Kastehelmi is one of Oiva Toikka's most popular creations and remained in production until 1988. In 2010, on the occasion of Oiva Toikka's 50-year career, Iittala decided to reintroduce some of the most popular pieces of the Kastehelmi line. Oiva Toikka enjoys a successful international career and has received numerous awards and honors, including the Lunning Prize, the Pro Finlandia Medal, the World Glass Now 85 Award, the Design Kaj Franck Prize and the Prince Eugen Medal.
